New Semester, New Learning!

A New Semester What matters? For us in the World of Learning, we get excited about meeting new people, learning about new cultures and expanding opportunities for schools and school districts. In the cold of January, we all can use a little boost (sleet, snow and grey skies can go away)! We are excited to be starting a new semester! With two new instructors, we are expanding the possibilities and getting to know some awesome people. My Spanish Journey In the last installment, I talked about getting out and using the Spanish I was learning! I prepped and practiced using Duolingo and a few podcasts. I was sure that I was ready to query my friends about what they would be eating on our jaunt to the Deerhead Inn (a well-known establishment in its own right for Jazz music). Despite the amazing clarinet and request for quiet, I found a few moments to test my skills and learn a bit, too. Since the restaurant did not have pescado y arroz, I learned about hamberguesa y pap...

Excitement and Challenge

The first week of this new year came in like a whirling dervish!   Rested from the holiday we all jumped back into the groove with good and new intentions. The bigger the challenge, the bigger the opportunity for growth. Anonymous Learning Spanish has been one of those exciting challenges I chose to try. I find myself surprised that I remember some vocabulary from my HS and College Spanish studies! This week I plan to expand how I use Notes in Spanish by participating in their forums and seeing if I can make some connections to practice speaking. I think that is the ...

See who is there with you and Celebrate!

In the text A prophecy from the Hopi Elders spoken at Oraibi, Arizona, June 8, 2000 the leaders called on their people to come together. Working together to support learning is a passion for me and those of us who call The World of Learning and Open Campus home. It is so much fun to have such dedicated and passionate educators to work with. We are all about Professional Learning at the WOL. We are learning all the time. This past week we began our 2018-19 PD and will continue throughout the school year! Our theme in the WOL is Growing the Mindset - as we continue to Welcome Learners' where They Are.  Working with teachers and leaders is one of my favorite things to do. You all are some of the most passionate and hardworking people I know. So calling on the vision of the Hopi Elders seems fitting as we begin another school year. The work we do in education is much like a fast flowing river! If we want to support our young people we cannot hang onto the shore. Learners nee...

Why World of Learning

World Of Learning at IU8 We are: Customized Learning, Rigorous Experiences, Caring Adults The World of Learning  joined Appalachia IU8 in the 16-17 School Year. Our offerings have expanded from Modern Languages to Core and Elective Courses, Credit Recovery and the support of EL Learners and Facilitators. We have also expanded through providing Professional Development to support schools and districts on the journey of using Virtual Design and Learning anywhere. Toward the end of the 2016 - 17 school year we added the management of the Open Campus Initiative to our services. ...
